CoolSculpting Explained | What is Fat Freezing? | Aspire Clinic

How Cryolipolisis works*

Fat freezing, or cryolipolisis, is one of the newest slimming treatments available and works by very effectively and selectively removing fat cells, thus reducing stubborn areas of body fat because, unlike other cells in the body, fat cells do not die off and regenerate. By adolescence we have all the fat cells we carry through life. These expand or contract as we put on or lose weight, but the number doesn't change.

At Aspire, we use CoolSculpting as it is the only FDA approved cryolipolysis treatment. With over 7 million treatments performed worldwide, not only is it safe, it has also been scientifically shown to be effective - in other words, it can really work!

Freeze away fat?

The idea that cold temperatures can be targeted to selectively alter our body fat led to the innovative cooling process developed by scientists at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine in Boston, USA, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen) and on average, in one hour, with one treatment, 25% of fat cells in the treated area will be broken down and destroyed. Over the following weeks, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells, leaving a slimmer, more sculpted you.

The CoolSculpting process

1. Fat cells prior to treating

2. Controlled cooling through CoolSculpting targets and kills only selected fat cells, illustrated here in blue

3. Over the following weeks, the targeted fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body

4. After 3 months, all the targeted fat cells are eliminated, leaving a more sculpted area

Will my fat come back?

Unlike other cells in the body, fat cells do not die off and regenerate on a regular basis. By adolescence, we each have the number of fat cells that we will maintain throughout our life. These fat cells may expand or contract as we put on or lose weight, but the number of cells does not change.

If an area of our body is particularly prone to putting on weight (such as our stomach or flanks, for instance), diet or exercise will help reduce the flab but cannot reduce the number of fat cells in that area, and so those cells are the ones most likely to expand again. CoolSculpting destroys between 25 and 65 percent of fat cells in the targeted area, meaning that even if you put on weight in the future, any weight gain is likely to be more evenly spread over your body and not concentrated in your 'problem areas'.
