Why did Black Friday start?
Black Friday originated as an in-person shopping experience the Friday after Thanksgiving, which was a paid holiday for many people. Retailers saw an opportunity to get people at home in to their stores so began slashing prices on merchandise to draw in shoppers, offering discounts on big-ticket items like televisions, electronics and appliances, giving shoppers a reason to jump out of bed and go shopping and even queue up to go in.
Why is it called Black Friday?
Historians say that Black Friday originally started in Philadelphia, where Tourists would descend on the city on the day between Thanksgiving and the annual Army-Navy football game held on Saturday. The Philadelphia police took to calling the day Black Friday because officers had to work long hours and deal with terrible traffic, bad weather and other crowd-related miseries.
When did Black Friday start in the UK?
It wasn't until 2010 that the Black Friday shopping phenomenon arrived in the UK. Unsurprisingly it was Amazon that introduced the Black Friday sales to this country and that first sale was so popular that customers complained that items sold out too quickly and the traffic volumes actually crashed the Amazon website.
