Vitamin B12 Injections at Aspire Clinic: Benefits, What to Expect & How They Work

Feeling tired is incredibly common, but sometimes there can be more going on beneath the surface.

Vitamin B12 plays an essential role in keeping our bodies functioning normally, from helping produce healthy red blood cells to supporting the nervous system. When levels become too low, replacing B12 can make an important difference.

We’re pleased to now offer Vitamin B12 injections at Aspire Clinic, following an initial consultation to assess your individual needs and suitability for treatment.

So, what exactly is Vitamin B12, why might you need it, and what happens when you come to Aspire for a B12 injection?

What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that the body cannot produce itself.

It plays several important roles within the body, including:

  • Supporting normal energy metabolism
  • Helping the body produce healthy red blood cells
  • Supporting normal nervous system function
  • Supporting normal psychological function
  • Supporting normal immune function

We normally obtain B12 through our diet, particularly from foods such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy products, as well as some fortified foods.

However, not everyone is able to obtain or absorb enough Vitamin B12.

Why can Vitamin B12 levels become low?

There are several possible reasons for Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Some people simply don’t consume enough B12 through their diet. This can be more common in people following vegan or very restricted diets.

For others, the issue isn’t how much B12 they’re consuming — it’s how effectively their body can absorb it.

Low B12 can be associated with certain gastrointestinal conditions, autoimmune gastritis (historically referred to as pernicious anaemia), previous stomach or bowel surgery and some medications.

This is one of the reasons we don’t treat B12 injections as a simple wellness add-on at Aspire. Your initial consultation matters.

Where appropriate, we may recommend that B12 levels or other symptoms are investigated further by your GP before proceeding with treatment.

What are the benefits of Vitamin B12 injections?

When someone is deficient in Vitamin B12, replacing that missing vitamin helps restore the body’s B12 supply and supports the normal processes that depend upon it.

Supporting energy and reducing deficiency-related tiredness

Vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy metabolism.

Low B12 can be associated with symptoms including extreme tiredness and lack of energy. When these symptoms are being caused by B12 deficiency, appropriate replacement can help as levels recover.

It’s important to make the distinction here: a B12 injection isn’t a stimulant or an instant energy shot.

If your B12 levels are already adequate, having additional B12 isn’t necessarily going to make you feel more energetic.

Healthy red blood cell production

One of B12’s most important roles is helping your body produce healthy red blood cells.

Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body, and a significant B12 deficiency can eventually lead to a form of anaemia.

Supporting your nervous system

Vitamin B12 is also essential for normal neurological function.

A deficiency can sometimes cause neurological symptoms such as numbness, tingling or problems with balance. Prolonged untreated deficiency can potentially cause lasting neurological problems, which is why unexplained symptoms shouldn’t simply be treated cosmetically or ignored.

Addressing a diagnosed B12 deficiency

Ultimately, the most important benefit of B12 treatment is straightforward: replacing something your body doesn’t have enough of.

For some people this may be a short-term treatment. For others — particularly where the underlying reason for deficiency cannot be corrected — ongoing B12 replacement may be required.

Why have an injection rather than take B12 tablets?

Not everyone who needs Vitamin B12 requires injections.

Depending on the cause of a deficiency, oral B12 supplements may be perfectly appropriate.

However, an intramuscular injection delivers Vitamin B12 directly into the body rather than relying on absorption through the digestive system.

This can be particularly relevant for people whose deficiency is related to their body’s ability to absorb Vitamin B12.

The appropriate form and frequency of B12 replacement should therefore be based on the individual rather than assuming injections are always the better option.

What happens at your B12 appointment at Aspire?

We’ve kept the process simple, while making sure the appropriate clinical checks happen first.

Step 1 — Your consultation

Your first appointment begins with a consultation.

We’ll discuss your general health, medical history, medications and supplements, previous B12 treatment and why you’re considering B12 injections.

We’ll also check for anything that could make treatment unsuitable and discuss whether further medical investigation or blood testing may be appropriate.

This is also your opportunity to ask us any questions.

Step 2 — Your Vitamin B12 injection

Once we’ve established that treatment is appropriate for you, your Vitamin B12 is administered as a quick intramuscular injection.

The appointment itself is straightforward and the injection only takes a few moments.

Step 3 — Back to your day

There’s very little downtime following a B12 injection and most people can simply continue with their normal day.

You may experience a little tenderness, redness, swelling or itching around the injection site. This is generally mild and settles fairly quickly.

We’ll provide you with aftercare information before you leave.

How quickly do B12 injections work?

The medication begins working straight away, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll immediately feel different.

If you have symptoms associated with Vitamin B12 deficiency, it may take several days or weeks for them to begin improving.

Everyone is different, and how you respond will depend on factors including your original B12 status, the reason for the deficiency and the symptoms you’re experiencing.

How often do you need Vitamin B12 injections?

There isn’t one schedule that’s appropriate for everyone.

Someone being medically treated for significant B12 deficiency may initially require much more frequent injections, while maintenance treatment for some conditions can be spaced several months apart.

Your treatment plan should therefore be based on clinical need rather than simply booking a B12 injection whenever you feel tired.

At Aspire, we’ll discuss the appropriate approach with you during your consultation and advise you if we think further investigation or ongoing care through your GP is more appropriate.
